APPLE SHIFT W = close pro tools session

OPTION ; = opens the workspace window where you can unmount drive without quiting pro tools
                        -When in the workspace window, find your drive, right click it and select "unmount"

Fit to window vertically: Hold OPTION then right click tick marks located before the beginning of a track and select "fit to window"

Mic Ties 1-8 are normalled to Mic Pre's 1-8 respectfully (no need to patch)
    -Make sure to turn on phantom power if using a condenser microphone
    -Turn the pre amp up just below the clipping point
    -On the O2R make sure to be on the "1-24" layer
    -To get your mic signal to pro tools select direct or a sub group on the board 
            -make sure you have selected the channel your mic is being sent to before selecting the sub group for it
    -Set the input of the track you are recording (on pro tools) to match the sub group number you sent it to
 
Always listen AFTER tape
Mic NEVER goes to stereo bus

Pro Tools Multi Tracking

OPTION SHIFT APPLE = Cascade all that is selected
APPLE TAB = Switch in between applications

To set Word Clock on the O2R:
-Press DIO (to the right of the screen on the console) until the correct screen appears
-find Word Clock, scroll to it, fill the box and press "enter" 
        -If having problems with speaker crackle, setting the Word Clock could possibly get rid of this 

Apogee Electronics "Big Ben":
-Make sure this matches your session
-used to match sample rate:
        -press the right arrow (will flash number) then press the up or down arrow until you find the sample rate that you want/ matches your session
                -if the number doesnt flash then keep pressing the left arrow until it does

Using Yamaha Studio Manager a.k.a. SM2 with Pro Tools:
-Open a Pro Tools session
-Set Outputs of each track
        -stereo tracks have L & R outputs (for example 1-2, 3-4, etc)
        -mono tracks only have one output
        -Start outputs at A3 (A 1-2 will be used for stereo mix later)

-On the Z-Sys route:

-Open SM2
        -To find SM2 from the finder window: Applications-->Yamaha-->Studio Manager-->SM2
    -Double click on the picture which will open the Yamaha Studio Editor

                        Output Port: yamaha 02R96 Port 8 
                       *dont mess with console device ID*
-Then click on synchronize (not synchronization) in manager window toolbar
        -either choose FROM HARDWARE or TO SOFTWARE 
-Open the patch editor window = APPLE 5
-set the default settings then make sure the dots are set in a single diagonal line (stop when you get to slot 2)

ON THE BOARD:
    -make sure to be on the 24-48 layer
    -press "stereo bus" and push up stereo fader
    -turn off 2TRD1

In Pro Tools:
-create a new stereo audio track
    -give it inputs 1-2 and outputs 1-2
-Record enable track and record
    -after done being recorded route on the Z-Sys:

PRO TOOLS MIXING:
Aux Groups:
    -Make new stereo aux track
    -Highlight track names that you want to be part of the group
    -Send all selected tracks to a bus by changing the output (bus 1-2)
    -Change input of aux track to the bus chosen for the group (bus 1-2)
    -right click on the bus name (bus 1-2) on either the output of the tracks or the input of the aux track
        -pick "rename"
            -rename it
Solo safe aux tracks:
    -APPLE *click* on the solo square on the aux track 

To make track groups:
    -Highlight track names
        -APPLE G
            -Name the group
    -when using track groups and want to affect on only one track, right click what you want to do to that specific track

APPLE *click* (in aux sends) on the diamonds that point up and down, select "send A" and small faders will pop up
    -make sure to rename the aux sends if not renamed yet

To make a master fader:
    -APPLE RIGHT, APPLE DOWN DOWN then ENTER

APPLE OPTION M = Narrow faders (in mix window)
APPLE 5 = markers window
APPLE *click* insert or plug-in on a channel will bypass it

Triggering an osolator:
    -create mono aux track
        -add plug in:
                        -RTAS
                            -other
                                -signal generator 
    -on kick drum track add a gate:
                                                -TDM
                                                    -Dynamics
                                                        -Gate
    -on the gate turn on the side chain and send the key to an open bus
        - CONTROL *click* on the output of the kick track and send it to the open bus you chose for the gate
    -turn the range down on the gate

Auto Tune:
    -create new mono track and add auto tune as a plug-in
        -make output of original vox track an open bus
        -make input of new mono track the same open bus you chose for the original vox track
    -Record on the new mono track = auto tuned version of original vox track
        - if you want to see how the original would sound with auto tuned before recording, click on "I" (input) on the new track while playing the original vox track

Sound Replacer:
    -add plug-in to original track
        -other   
            -sound replacer
    -find the sound you want to replace the original sound by clicking the floppy disk icon under the triangle with yellow, red, or blue in it.

H/P mix in studio D:
    -create a second master fader
        -send output to interface 3-4
    -place interface onto a send on each track (small faders)
    -turn up what you want to send to the H/P

Using pro tools with the 02R:
    -to use channel 1-24 on the 02R press "9" on the "user defined keys" section of the 02R
    -to use channle 25-48 on the 02R press "10" on the "user defined keys" section of the 02R

Automation:
    -Touch:
        -When you move the fader it does records whatever you do with the fader
    -Latch:
        -will stay where you leave it

To make a new playlist:
    -in the edit window, click on the diamonds to the right of the track name 
    -to duplicate, click duplicate which will create a copy of that recording
    -to create a new blank track, click on "new"  
    -you can then switch back and forth between takes


On the 02R:
    While automating, a red flashing light flashes on the channel you are automating (on remote layer)

MOVIE PROJECT:
    requirement = either 1 minute of fast "mega power punching swiss army knife" action or 5 minutes of "boring sounds"
                                -also the movie needs to be a .MOV file

        *you can find videos/ movie trailers in the QUICK TIME MOVIES folder located in the STUDENT MATERIALS folder
            -if you have you have a movie you want to use instead of the ones at school you can use "Mac The Ripper" or "HandBreak" to take movies off of DVD's

    using music: think of song structure compared to movie structure
                            -have 3 different music beds
                                    *REMEMBER* Owen will listen to your project without the music to see how much work you put in!

Written script with time code, category, and description sections

    -Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers

VITC (video)
    -Vertical Interval Time Code = If you press pause, you can still see the video

LTC (sound)
    -Linear Time Code = press pause and sound stops

Burn in = big counter in pro tools (not smpte, but is more of a "mental time code" to help user)

OPTION SHIFT APPLE I = import video
                -OR-
File --> import --> video

APPLE 2 = session set up window

    in the session set up window:
        -change time code rate to match video imported
        -change start of video to 01:00:00:00

To put less stress on the computer, on the video track, change "frames" to "blocks"
    -find this below the name of the track and above fps

APPLE 9 = video window

Set main timer to Time Code

Set nudge to 1 Frame and Time Code

to find nudge value:
                1000             = nudge value
         frames per second

If recording foley:
    -use really nice mic with low self noise
    -if you have a mic with a high pass filter on it... USE IT!

APPLE + K= turns pre roll on/off


APPLE + OPTION + G: creates region group

Highlight a region (with a track group on) that makes a loop
        -cut it (APPLE + E)
            -make cut region into a region group
                -name the region group

to clean up session:
    Highlight and delete all waves from the edit window of session
    in region tab
        click on region (on top of tab)
            -->select
                -->delete all unused except whole files 

TCE: time compression/expansion
    to change the trim tool to TCE:
        click and hold over the trim tool or press F6 until TCE comes up


Parallel Compression:
    -duplicate your drum group master
        -add a limiter to the duplicated track
                -slam the signal but do not use an extremely fast attack, back it up enough so that the snare and kick still play normal and "punch"

if there is a phase/ delay issues at home or when using LE or M-powered:
    -place the same plug-ins on each drum aux master but bypass the limiter on the original drum aux track
        -this will balance out the amount of cpu used on each track

    *In HD just change the delay compensation to "long"

to add an 808 drum kick sound to a mix:
    -create a mono aux track
    -add a signal generator plug-in
    -add an expander/gate plug-in
            -assign the side chain to an empty bus
        -place that empty bus on a send of the kick drum
                -turn up that send
    -on the expander/ gate:
            -change the settings to fit the song you're working on
    -if you set an extremely quick attack there will be a click at the beginning of the tone

Shift + Spacebar: play at half speed

Shift + 3: record at half speed

hold OPTION + hold APPLE and *click* on plug-ins: bypass all plug-ins

If you want to use a gate/ expander plug-in as a gate:
    -place the range all the way left
    -place the ratio all the way right


to trigger a sample snare from an original snare track:
    -duplicate the snare track
    -place the soundreplacer plug-in on the duplicated track
    -load a sample (click on the floppy disk above the trash cans to the left of the plug-in window)
        -pick a sample to replace the snare (you can find snare samples in the drum samples folder under "student materials")
    -after you pick a sample press "auto update" to the right of the plug-in window
    -change your threshold (the arrow with the yellow, red, or blue dots in them)
    -once your settings are set press "process"

splitting a stereo track into a two mono tracks:
    -highlight the tracks that you want to split
    -right click and select "split into mono"

vocal align:
    -if you need BG vocals to align with a main vocal (and they are recorded off)
    -open VocalALignPro in audiosuite (under "other")
    -highlight a section of the main vocal
    -press "guide" then "capture"
    -frogger down to the BG vocal (press ";") and highlight the section that you want to align with the main vocal
    -press "Dub"
    -then press "Align", "Process" then "Spot"

To enable automation on any section of a plug-in
    -Press "Auto" next to "Safe"
        -then select what part you want to enable automation on

Track View Groups:
    -in the tracks section (to the left of the waves in the edit window) select only the tracks that you want to be in the group
    -have the tracks fit to window
    -press "enter" on the numeric pad
    -dont select it as a marker make it "none", give it a number (in the 70's would be best), give it a name, and select "track view" and "track view/ hide"
    -lets say you made your drum track view group number 71. to bring up JUST the drum group press PERIOD 71 PERIOD on the numeric key pad

To change solo settings so only one track can be solo'd at a time:
OPTIONS TAB
    --> solo mode
            -->X-OR


to change scrolling
    -click on option tab
        -scrolling

To change the TCE settings (for example: guitar, bass, etc)
Preferences
    -->processing
            -->TCE

To open beat detective:
Events tab
    -->Beat detective

APPLE + 5: Memory Locations Window

APPLE + *click* on solo: Solo safe's the track

APPLE + SHIFT + N then APPLE right + APPLE down: Stereo Aux track

Can Modify memory locations selection by right clicking or CONTROL clicking on a marker name in the memory location window 

Instead of opening a song's session to mix (import the session data instead):
File
    -->Import
                --->Session Data
                            -copy from source media
                            -hold option and select "new track" for the destination of the tracks
                            -check the "session data to import"
                            -Main playlist options: "import"

Adjusting small fader auxes (on pro tools) using the board:
    -on remote layer
        -press "aux" instead of "fader"
        -push up fader and the small fader on pro tools will move up as well

-hold APPLE and *click* on the diamonds of a send and the small faders will appear 

To create a Reverb or Delay master aux:
    -create a stereo aux track
        -input: an empty bus (ex. bus 1-2)
        -output: 1-2
    -put an effect on the aux (ex. reverb)
    -place bus 1-2 on each channel's first send
        -these small faders will feed the aux master
    -rename the bus as the name of the effect (ex. rename bus 1-2 to "reverb")

if you have a plug-in open and you click on the target thats on the plug-in you will be able to open another plug-in without having the first plug-in window disappear

Creating group tracks using auxes:
    -create a stereo aux track
        -input: empty bus (ex. bus 5-6)
        -output: 1-2
    -set the output of each channel that you want to be part of the group to the empty bus you chose (bus 5-6)

to change delay compensation:
    Open the Set Up tab
        --->Delay Compensation
                    -->set the delay compensation engine to "long"

In mix window:
    -if you press a letter on the keyboard it will turn on that mix group


REASON and Pro Tools
To sync Reason up with Pro Tools:
    -create stereo aux track "in ticks"
            -multi-channel RTS
                -instrument
                    -Reason (stereo)

Reason:
to create mixer
    -create 
        -mixer 14:2
    -pressing TAB will flip to the back of the mixer where you can route everything
to create drum sampler  
  -create
        -redrum
            -pick a kit

on sequencer
    -to place start loop marker
        -hold OPTION and click
    -to place end loop marker
        -hold APPLE and click

on sampler:
    after making a pattern and want to copy the beat to the sequencer
        -right click on sampler
                -copy pattern to track

you have 32 available patterns to create on the sampler
    -to copy one pattern to an empty pattern:
            -right click on sampler
                    -copy pattern (for example: 1)
            -pick another pattern (for example:2)
                    -right click 
                            -paste pattern

To record what is playing from reason:
    -create new stereo track
    -input: an unused bus (bus 1-2)
    -output: 1-2
on Reason aux track:
    -output: the empty bus you chose for the new stereo track (bus 1-2)
    -input: 1-2
Record enable the new stereo track
    -record

create a "dr rex loop player"
    -can find and use pre made loops

To create new playlists on an track:
    -left click on diamonds to the right of the track name
            -click "new playlist"

To toggle between relative and absolute grid click and hold on "grid" tab

APPLE + E: zoom toggle



o edit reason using pro tools:
    -create a midi track on pro tools
        -select which input you want to sequence (for example: redrum)
            -click on the grid of the midi track to write the sequence
    *studio D has a problem with syncing this correctly*

Reason:
    to quantize:
        -highlight sequenced region
        -press APPLE + K

To change starting point of song
    - click on EVENT tab
        -->Time
                -->Move song start
                        -select bars and set it to 1

APPLE + I: insert tempo change


MIDI track on pro tools working with Reason:
    -Create MIDI track
            -Input: MIDI controller you're using (for example: Oxygen 8)
                            -all channels
            -Output: Whichever instrument you are using in Reason

In reason go to preferences (audio interfaces) and un-check the box that says "use with reason"

Markers:
    Open the Setup tab
        -->Preferences
                -->Editing tab    
                        -Check "Auto-name memory locations when playing" box
After this is set you can use your markers to create a rhythm (set markers by pressing ENTER on the number pad)
    -This effect can be heard in songs like "Blame it" by Jamie Fox and "Stay Fly" by Three 6 Mafia

SHIFT + APPLE + K: bounce selected region 
    -can be used as a sample in redrum in reason 

Bringing a Dr. Rex loop to pro tools MIDI track:
    select a Dr. Rex loop (in reason)
           -export Rex as midi files
In Pro Tools:
    -import MIDI file
        -select the saved Rex MIDI file
            -it will open a new MIDI track
        -make the Output of the MIDI track the Dr. Rex you were using in reason            

SHIFT + OPTION + APPLE: cascade all the selected tracks
    -use this if you want to cascade the inputs or outputs of a group of tracks you have selected

APPLE + OPTION + M: Narrow mix view (makes all the channels thinner in mix window)

OPTION *CLICK* on a fader will bring it to unity

OPTION + C: gets rid of clip lights

Setting up pro tools to work with SM2:
    In Pro Tools change all outputs to "digital" in the I/O window
        -cascade outputs of channels 3-16
            -group things together to fit everything

Using Studio Manager:

Open SM2
    -File --> system set up
        Input Port: Port 8
        Output Port: Port 8
    -synch FROM SOFTWARE - TO HARDWARE
        -if there is some crackling press DIO (on console, to the left of the screen) until you see the word clock select page.
        -move the black box until its over WC and press ENTER on the console 
     -open patch editor (APPLE+5)
        Left Side Channels (in blue) =Channels on Board
        Top/ Slot 1 Channels (in grey) = Pro Tools Outputs
            -Skip Slot 1 Channels 1 & 2
            -Slot ch.3 goes to Ch 1, Slot ch. 4 goes to Ch 2, etc

Using EQ's, compression, etc
    -select a channel
        -open Windows Tab
            -open Selected Channel
                -open Main View




Make sure to save your pro tools session with a sample rate of 48 KHz

Sound Effects:
    storage --> student materials -->sound effects

    to sample sounds press APPLE ; (which brings up the workspace window)
            -open folders to get to effects and click on the speaker next to the sound you want to hear

    while in the workspace window:
        -pressing ENTER on the numeric key pad will play your video on pro tools
        -pressing SPACE BAR will play the sound you are sampling

When importing stereo sound effects tracks, make sure to split them into mono tracks and delete the stereo track
        -this will make panning easier

APPLE 5 opens the marker window
        -used to organize your markers

LOOP RECORDING:
    -right click on the record button
            -pick loop
    -record over and over/ take a couple takes
        -right click the file and pick "matches"
            -you will see the different takes

To hear effects in regions list:
    hold OPTION then left click and hold over the name of the sound

APPLE P unlocks a mode that allows you to drag a sound from your regions list into a track and you can type in the frame of which you want to place it
    this mode can also be unlocked by:
        options --> auto spot regions --> turn off

When saving session onto an external hard drive:
    file -->save session copy in
        -in this window dont forget to check the boxes for "all audio files" and "movie/video files"



rim region:
highlight the section of a region that you want to keep then press APPLE T

To make a whoosh:
-take the beginning of sound
    -put it in an empty section of a track
    -reverse it
    -select the section of the sound and highlight past it 
    - consolidate (OPTION SHIFT 3)
    -go into audiosuite and open a reverb
    -set your reverb then "process" the highlighted section
    -then reverse the highlighted section again

APPLE (,): to set sync point


-take all sound FX and make their output bus 1-2
-create a stereo aux track for the sound FX
    -set input as bus 1-2
-take all music and make their output bus 3-4
-create a stero aux track for the music
    -set input as bus 3-4
-place a compress/limiter on the music bed aux track
    -have the music duck when a sound FX happen


To snap the end of a region to where the cursor is placed:
place the cursor where you want it
    -hold CONTROL + APPLE then click the region, that you want to move,w with the hand tool


 5.1, DVD, QUICKTIME


Always bounce video in 16 Bit
        - APPLE SHIFT B = bounce as quicktime

HOW TO MAKE A STEREO MOVIE:
    Highlight section of movie you want to bounce
        -bounce it
        -quite pro tools and open toast titanium 
                -go to video tab
                    -change name
                    -format --> DVD Video
                    -Drag video into toast
                            -edit button
                                -name it
                                -switch to video tab
                                        -move around to find what frame you want to represent the movie
                                        -set button picture
                                        -check "Auto Play Disk On Insert" box

in pro tools:
    / = 10 nudges right
    M = 10 nudges left
       
For sound design turn off "time correction" when pitch shifting in Audio Suite.

to enable automation on a plug-in or parts of a plug-in:
    -hold own APPLE OPTION CONTROL
        -click on what you want to automate 
     
APPLE OPTION G = Region Group

5.1 :

to make 5.1 into stereo using analog processing;
    -on mulitmax press "downmix"
    -patch: MM O/P (downmix)
                        -to-
                192 analog input 1&2
    -create a stereo track with input of analog 1 & 2
    -record for duration of movie
    -bounce session 
            -16bit
            -48KHz
            -seperate mono tracks

Creating 5.1 DVD with Stereo as on language and 5.1 as another:
 
Open the A.Pack application
    -drop tracks where they belong
    -audio tab
        - set dialog normalization to "-31 dBFS"
    -preprocessing tab
            -uncheck "apply 90 degree phase shift"
    -save

Open Quicktime
    -open video
        -export file as MPEG2

Open the DVD Studio Pro application
    -press F3 for the best window view
    -drag files from finder 
            -stereo file on A1
            -surround file on A2
            -movie file on V1
    -name disk
    -click on track (on the left) and change size
    -burn
