This course introduces students to the theories, practices, and tools used in digital audio production.

 

The first half of the course covers the basics of digital audio recording, editing and mixing using the program Pro Tools with a special focus on underlying concepts such as destructive vs. non destructive, proper file management, setting proper levels, insert vs. aux effects, etc.  The basics of MIDI are also covered.

 

The second half of the course focuses on the fundamental theories and concepts behind digital audio: binary number systems, analog to digital converters, cables and connectors, digital protocol formats, file formats, and delivery media.

Hardware topics: computer components & protocols, Audio and MIDI interfaces, Digital Audio Connection types, etc.

Prerequisite: CSI 101 Understanding Computer Technologies
